The Physical Geography of the Sea

Reflecting on our relationship with the environment will realign perceptions, allowing viewers to understand and interact with the landscape in new ways. It will reinforce the viewer’s comprehension of interconnected water systems driving home the impact of everyday actions on the ecological systems that we often take for granted.

The artwork and publication will provide the viewer with a clearer picture of the history of the Kronstadt tide gauge and its relation to the surrounding landscape; knowledge of the human interaction necessary to record and catalogue the measurements of sea levels; an understanding of the desire of neighboring Baltic states to switch from this antiquated system of measurement to a more modern process, and an overview of how climate change has reshaped the coastline.
