SIPHONOPHORE pledge, Sculpture/ Social practice, upcycled materials including electric, audio, computer, phone, and appliance adapter cords, 50ft x 6ft x 3ft variable throughout, 2021

Community Organism is meant to engage people in thinking about climate change by having a sculptural deep sea creature that people can add to when they take personal responsibility to take an action to combat climate change via a pledge. These concepts are represented as a siphonophore- a colonial deep sea organism made of several individual organisms working together to survive and thrive. It’s an apt metaphor for what individual actions mean in the larger movement of climate action. Beyond this, the process of creating both the sculpture and pledge has shown that there are a multitude of concepts and contexts about climate change that are as intertwined as the various cords that make up the sculpture, as well as the variety of ways that individuals, families and communities can take action to combat climate change.
